Chapter Thirteen

EMMA

“Ms. Endrizzi!” My professor yells in front of the entire class, bringing me out of my stupor. I don’t know how long he’s been trying to get my attention and I suddenly feel embarrassed for letting my mind wander the way it has since Joseph dropped me off several hours ago.

I apologize to my professor and answer his question, thankfully getting it right, and try my best to focus back on his lecture. It doesn’t work though. No matter what I do, I cannot focus on my classes today or on anything else pertaining to what I’m supposed to be doing. All I can think about is Joseph and how he said he would take care of me. How I don’t need to worry about anything because he’ll be the one to take care of it from now on.

What the hell does that mean?

Am I now at his beck and call?

Am I supposed to let him know about every aspect of my life?

If I don’t obey him, will I be punished?

This whole thing has me in a complete funk, and I want nothing more than to get out of it.

Thankfully, class ends a short time later and I dash out the door before my professor has time to grill me about my behavior today. It’s also my last class of the day, which makes me even more grateful. Since Joseph is supposed to pick me up, maybe now I’ll get the chance to grill him about what he does for a living and how he expects our relationship to progress from here on out. Sure enough, as soon as I get to the parking lot, there he is, in his fancy car, with the engine running.

I get in, avoid making eye contact with him, and lean my head back on the seat, hoping he drives away while I try to figure out how to talk to him. However, that doesn’t happen, because as soon as I lean my head back, Joseph pulls me in for a hard kiss, making my eyelids flutter and my body tremble. I have no idea how this man has this kind of power over me. How he entices my body the way he does. All I know is that the moment he touches me, I’m a goner and I can’t do anything to get out of it.

“I missed you.” He says once he lets me catch my breath.

I stare at him, not really knowing what to say, or even realizing what I’ve gotten myself into.

He finally lets me go, allowing me to gather my bearings as he drives away from the University and back towards the city. It doesn’t take us long to get back to the house he brought me to a few days ago, making me wonder if perhaps this may end up being my future home.
